Golf Course Update | Spring 2023
Greetings Patrons,
I hope all of you are enjoying the newly renovated golf course.
New Golf Carts!
The long-awaited golf carts have finally been delivered to the course. The Yamaha carts feature the YAMATRACK system. As a player, you will notice a screen at the center console area that shows:
- An overview of the hole you are playing
- The hole number and par
- Whether you are on pace
- Yardage to specified Pin Zone
The other options on the screen are a Flyover, Green View, Shot Distance, Scorecard, and Food & Beverage Menu.
For the golf staff, we can monitor the pace of play, send messages, and see the battery status of each cart. We will continue to explore many other fleet management uses to optimize the life of these carts.
The other feature that we will utilize is the GeoFence. GeoFence will allow us to make sensitive course areas no-drive zones. We will start with green surroundings and all par three holes (cart path only). We will then introduce areas around tees, property lines, and problem areas on the course. Our goal is to keep the course turf in the best condition possible. I'm sure you have seen some areas I mentioned already showing significant wear after only four months.
The GeoFence areas will show up on the screen and instruct players to exit the area only by reversing the golf cart. I'm sure this feature will have a learning curve, but it will show results in course conditions for years to come.
Storm Prediction System
We recently updated our ThorGuard lightning, tornado, and severe storm prediction system. This system is for the protection of our players and will sound as an event approaches. One long horn blast will signal players to leave the course and return to the clubhouse. The shelters on the course are not lightning shelters, so please act accordingly when the system sounds.
ThorGuard is automated and works on data collected by the system. It also clears automatically when the storm leaves the area. We will shut down access to play and practice areas while the system is on alert. Three short horn blasts signify the clearing of the system. We will open all areas after a quick assessment.
Water Filling Stations
Starting in 2020, we ceased placing water coolers on the course. At the same time, we installed a water bottle filling station in the clubhouse and a second on the 14th hole at the shelter. With the warmer weather approaching, we encourage you to bring a reusable water bottle and refill it often to stay hydrated. Late Risers (our on-site restaurant) and the beverage carts that routinely loop the course also sell refreshments.
Yellow Flags
Our yellow flags are now on the course, making the pins more visible from a distance. The difference was immediately noticeable! As for the grey flags, we have them in the pro shop for sale.
Hybrid Scorecard
When we reopened, Tommy, Bea, and I worked to create a scorecard with options. We call this card the Hybrid card; the yardages fit seamlessly between the regular scorecard yardages.
Why is this important? One reason is that, for some players, 7,009 yards is too long of a distance, but 6,631 is too short. The Hybrid card uses a combination of the Championship and Match tees with a yardage of 6,752 yards. The Hybrid card provides another option and, in turn, creates more opportunities for fun. Ask the starter for a Hybrid card on your next visit and give it a try.
Vandalism
As in most courses throughout the county, we receive our fair share of vandalism. Before we opened, the area behind the 13th green was damaged twice. The interior of the clubhouse was tagged with graffiti. And, as we all see, the front entranceway gets hit frequently.
Please watch out for perpetrators and call the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office non-emergency line to report any knowledge of these instances.
Movie Night!
We will have a FREE Movie Night at the golf course on Friday, May 12. Gates open at 7:30pm. Movie begins at 8:15pm. Featured movie is Freaky Friday! The movie will be near the 10th tee (behind the clubhouse). Late Risers will be open for your food and beverage needs. Outside food and beverages are not allowed on the premises. Movies in the Park
